04 · On the bridge

What a bridge team actually does

Navigation is a team activity: lookout, radar, charts, radios and engine orders all feed one picture. Good deck officers keep that picture clear, speak up and listen.

The NSI-001 Bridge Team Management Refresher is a featured course on exactly this theme.

  • Passage planning and chart work
  • Radar, lookout and communication
  • Safe watchkeeping day and night

08 · The craft

Old instruments, modern watch

The sextant is a reminder that navigation began with sky and sea. Today a deck officer reads electronic charts and radar as well, but the habit of cross-checking every source is the same.

For options beyond the classroom, see ProCareerTek deck officer programs.

  • Cross-check every fix
  • Trust instruments, verify them
  • Keep a clean log

Deck officer questions

A deck officer navigates and runs the ship's cargo and safety operations, starting as a cadet and rising through Third, Second and Chief Officer to Master. ProCareerTek lists DNS, BSc Nautical Science and Officer of Watch pathways on its deck officer programs page.

Both are deck-officer pre-sea routes: DNS is a Diploma in Nautical Science and BSc Nautical Science is a degree-level program. Duration, eligibility and approvals differ by institute, so ask the ProCareerTek team to compare them against your qualification.

A cadet learns watchkeeping, seamanship, mooring and safety practice on board under the supervision of officers while completing the training book. For skills you can add later, the Nanak Shipping Institute featured courses include Bridge Team Management Refresher.

NSI-001 Bridge Team Management Refresher and NSI-019 Leadership and Human Element suit deck officers, and the catalogue lists deck, tanker, safety, offshore and simulator courses besides. Browse everything on the institute course catalogue and confirm that a course fits your rank.

Progress comes in stages: pre-sea qualification, cadet training, an Officer of Watch certificate, then added sea time and exams for each higher rank. ProCareerTek describes a cadet-to-captain roadmap on its career guidance page, and the regulator sets the exact rules.

Yes, Nanak Ship Management provides crew management covering STCW and MLC manning, credential vetting, training, welfare, travel and payroll for owners. Qualified officers can ask about current needs through the crew management page, though no placement is promised.
